The Dallas District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) contracted with Laser Geomatics to scan the failed mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) wall and surrounding areas to provide the engineers responsible for repair the spatial data information required. TxDOT chose to use laser scanning technology due to the complexity of the failure and the high traffic volumes associated with this ramp area. This project's objectives were to provide enough data for traffic control as well as providing information not only of the failed MSE wall, but also of the large area of failed concrete slope paving.

Due to temperatures that exceeded 95ยบ with high humidity, Laser Geomatics chose to limit scanning times to early morning and evening to alleviate problems inherent with these extreme temperatures.

The scanning portion of this project took approximately 12 hours and included 14 scans. NTB of Dallas provided the traditional surveying necessary to align the scan data into state plane coordinates. After collection of the scan data on a Monday morning, Tuesday morning and evening, and briefly Wednesday morning, the scans were post-processed and the following deliverables were created and delivered the following Friday for a project time of eight days:

- MicroStation files with vector linework that
  include:

          Edge of Pavement, Guardrails,
          Concrete Barriers, Drop Inlets,
Top of MSE wall, Paint Stripes

- GeoPak Digital Terrain Model

- High resolution digital photography
