The Dallas District of the Texas Department of Transportation contracted with Laser Geomatics to scan a multi-level interchange, 13 bridges, two railroad crossings, railroad cross sections, a utility crossing and multiple clearances in downtown Dallas. TxDOT choose laser scanning technology due to the high traffic volumes on this route and the ability to acquire accurate data in difficult locations. The project provided supplemental survey data for the $1 billion multi-modal transportation improvements of Interstate Highway 30 and Interstate Highway 35E through downtown Dallas.
The scanning portion of this project took approximately six weeks and included 378 scans, which supplied 3.6 gigabytes of data. Carter and Burgess of Dallas provided the traditional surveying necessary to align the scan data into state plane coordinates. After data acquisition, the scans were post-processed and the following deliverables were created and delivered to the client less than one month after collection.
- MicroStation files with vector linework
representing the low chords of the structures,
edge of pavement, piers, abutments, and
utility lines
- GEOPAK Digital Terrain Models of the
